Baldur's Gate 2 Help: FAQ for SoA Romances and Other Headaches

If you're stuck and can't find the answer in my walkthrough, a forum is usually the best source of Baldur's Gate II help and advice (particularly for bugs). Some problems are recurring, however, so here is a targeted Baldur's Gate 2 FAQ sheet for the romances and other problems I get a lot of mail about:

Jaheira's Romance Is Stalled: The Jaheira romance can take a long time, much longer than any of the others. Be patient, and realize that most romance dialogues won't happen in dungeons, which includes the Underdark. There are a couple of points in Jaheira's romance plot where you have to sleep outside somewhere (Trademeet or Umar Hills work well), so if you think you're stuck you can try that. Also, Jaheira's romance will not progress beyond a certain point until you have finished the Find Montaron quest. Finally, you may have finished your romance with Jaheira as far as it will progress in SoA (the last dialogue is the one the morning after she asks you to stay with her). It is also possible that Jaheira will dump you and end the romance if you say or do something wrong--tell her to shut up, for instance, or kick her out of the party too many times, or choose Aerie or Viconia over her--but she is very explicit about it whenever this happens and it's hard to miss it if it does. Allowing Jaheira to die or be petrified may sometimes trigger a bug that ends her romance.

Jaheira Ran Away: The first time she leaves, telling you she will be back in a day, she will in fact come back on her own after your next rest screen. The second time she leaves, leaving you a note telling you not to follow her, if you want her back you will have to disobey the note and follow her. Neither of these disappearances have anything to do with Jaheira's romance plot--they would happen to you even if you were female.

Aerie's Romance Is Stalled: Be patient, and realize that most romance dialogues won't happen in dungeons, which includes the Underdark. There are a couple of points in Aerie's romance where you have to sleep before getting the next dialogue, so you could try that. Or, you may just have finished your romance with Aerie as far as it will progress in SoA. This romance is much shorter than the others. Her last romance dialogue is the one the morning after she asks you to sleep with her. It is also entirely possible that Aerie has dumped you and ended the romance without your knowing it. She is sometimes rather vague about it. If you slept with Phaere, for example, it's over, even though Aerie doesn't say so in so many words. If you slept with Aerie herself, it's over. Allowing Aerie to die, be petrified, or leave the party may sometimes trigger a bug that ends her romance.

Aerie Ran Away: You're screwed, mate. She may claim she's going back to the circus, but if you go there, Quayle has no idea where she is. If you eject her from the party yourself, she will successfully find her way home, but if she leaves because she's upset with you, she's apparently so blinded by emotion she gets eaten by wild animals en route or something. You'll never see her (or anything she was carrying when she left) again.

Viconia's Romance Is Stalled: Be patient, and realize that most romance dialogues won't happen in dungeons, which includes the Underdark. There are a couple of points in Viconia's romance where you have to sleep before getting the next dialogue, so you could try that. Or, you may just have finished your romance with Viconia as far as it will progress in SoA. It doesn't end very well. Her last romance dialogue should be the one where she says your relationship is never going to work out and tries to leave the party. You can talk her into staying, but will see no more romance dialogues for the remainder of Baldur's Gate 2: SoA. (You will get a chance to pursue the romance further in Throne of Bhaal, so don't panic.) Allowing Viconia to die, be petrified, or leave the party may sometimes trigger a bug that ends her romance.

Viconia's Romance Won't Start: *sigh* You're an elf, aren't you? Viconia isn't attracted to elves.

Viconia Ran Away: All is not lost. When you begin ToB and the Fate Spirit asks you if there's anyone you want back in the party, ask for her. She'll come back and pick up her romance with you where she left it off. She'll have lost all the equipment and some of the XP you left her with, though.

Anomen's Romance Is Stalled: Be patient, and realize that most romance dialogues won't happen in dungeons, which includes the Underdark. There are a couple of points in Anomen's romance where you have to sleep before getting the next dialogue, so you could try that. Or, you may just have finished your romance with Anomen as far as it will progress in SoA. It does end rather abruptly. His last romance dialogue should be the one where he declares his love for you. (This will be after he sleeps with you if he's chaotic neutral, the same dialogue if he's lawful good). However, if the romance abruptly ends before Anomen sleeps with you, you have probably done something wrong. When he apologizes for yelling at you after asking about your divine heritage and says he feels like giving up on his dream, there are wrong answers here. If you counselled Anomen to kill Saerk, then changing your mind and telling him to steel himself and obey the order will confuse him, whereas if you counselled him to toe the lawful path, changing your mind and telling him to stop worrying about what the order thinks will confuse him. If he gets these conflicting signals from you, he will dump you, and you will not hear any more lovetalk out of him. Since he doesn't say he's dumping you--just that he "needs time to think" or something else neutral--it is definitely possible to incorrectly assume the romance is still live. It's not. Unless he calls you a "dark flame" at the end of this conversation, your romance is over. Finally, allowing Anomen to die, be petrified, or leave the party may sometimes trigger a bug that ends his romance.

Anomen Ran Away: You're supposed to follow Anomen. If you don't within four days, he will take his vengeance and then either flee Athkatla forever or kill himself. You know where he's going; follow him there and talk him out of it if you want to keep him.

Vampirized Dead Lovers: Search the back rooms in Bodhi's Lair till you find three special-looking books about vampires. Read the one about removing vampiric curses. It will tell you what to do. If you can't understand it for some reason, you can go to the Church of Oghma in the Docks district, they will send you to talk to the man who sold them the books, and he will tell you what to do again. But you shouldn't need to go through all this--the answer is right in the books.
